“I’m walking with faith”: Basketball star explains dominant performance despite fasting

Basketball player Kyrie Irving’s dominant performance in a recent game whilst fasting for Ramadan wowed spectators and commentators alike.

The Brooklyn Nets star helped his team beat Cleveland Cavaliers 115-108 during the NBA’s Play-In game, with Irving scoring 34 points and making 12 assists.

After the game, Irving was asked by a reporter about his dominant performance despite fasting.

But Irving did not make a meal out of his performance, pointing out that he is not alone in practising one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

“It’s a journey with God, and I am not alone in this,” Irving said. “I have brothers and sisters all around the world that are fasting with me. We hold our prayers and meditations very sacred.”

He added: “So I’m walking with faith, and that is all that matters. And when I get a chance to do this in this type of arena and showcase my talents that have been granted to me strictly from God, I’m humbled.”

Two weeks ago, Kyrie Irving made news again when he was breaking his fast before realising that he was required on the court again.

It was during Ramadan last year that Irving confirmed publically that he converted to Islam. Back then, Irving did not say much about his experience of fasting beyond saying that it was an “adjustment.”
