The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly backed a resolution supporting Palestinian UN membership, underscoring Israel’s increased isolation on the world stage amid its genocide in Gaza.
The resolution passed with 143 votes in favour, 9 against, and 25 abstentions. It calls on the UN Security Council to grant the state of Palestine full membership status.
While this resolution does not grant full membership, it affirms that Palestine qualifies to join and gives it extra rights within the UN General Assembly.
Any full UN membership still faces an uphill battle, as it requires a recommendation from the Security Council, where the United States wields veto power and has historically shielded Israel from censure.
But the vote does demonstrate the widespread international support and backing for Palestinian statehood and self-determination.
